Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is widely recognised as the third most common cause of vision loss in the aged population globally. It is the primary cause of blindness in developed countries. Until now, damage to the macula was only generally picked up once there were noticeable symptoms such as partial loss of vision, blurred vision or the inability to see in dim light.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are the carotenoids which make up the macular pigment of the eye. These molecules are required for normal vision and preventing future eye disease. As the body is unable to make them, they need to be ingested from the diet. Small amounts of both substances are found in leafy green vegetables and in yellow and orange fruits and vegetables. However, one needs a daily intake of at least 10mg of Lutein and 2mg of Zeaxanthin to maintain a healthy density of the macular pigment. Supplementation is therefore required to replenish these carotenoids.
Vitasight is a new eye care supplement which contains 10mg of Lutein and 2.4mg of Zeaxanthin in a single dose.
Macular pigment screening is now available in South Africa for the first time using the Elektron MPSII device. A Vitasight Partner Optometrist using the Elektron MPSII can now get a reading of the density of the macular pigment in just a few seconds. The result is a measurement of the amount of macular pigment and the associated risk of eye disease. This gives an individual an indication of both the need for supplementation, and on return to the Optometrist, the effect of the supplement. The earlier we can pick up the susceptibility of the patient to AMD, the earlier supplementation can start and the better the results.
