Making a Difference Where it Matters Most: Early Childhood Development

early childhood development

It was President Cyril Ramaphosa who, in his 2018 SONA speech, was quoted as saying, “If we are to break the cycle of poverty, we need to educate the children of the poor.” There is global consensus around the premise that the first thousand days of a child’s life could hold the key to unlocking their lifelong potential. With good reason, too: by the age of five, 90% of a child’s brain will have developed. To this end, adequate healthcare, wholesome nutrition, quality childcare, early learning and stimulation are tantamount.¹

Early Childhood Development (ECD) is broadly defined as the programmes, activities and experiences focused on promoting the education of young children. ECD can be extremely successful when caregivers, parents and educators all focus on this outcome. ECD also aims to equip little ones with confidence and the social skills they need, to forge a fruitful childhood and ultimately, successful adulthood. Much progress can be made to correct social inequality and poverty when quality ECD forms the foundation of young children.

Accredited training providers like The READ Institute offer invaluable learning courses that will empower ECD caregivers with the tools required to teach little ones with confidence. Registrations are now open for 2020! Please visit www.thereadinstitute.co.za, or request information via institute@read.co.za, or call 0823887141 for further information.

As part of the READ Group, The READ Institute is built on the foundation of READ Educational Trust, a proudly South African NGO working tirelessly in teacher training and school resource provisioning and actively promoting literacy through successful programmes, since its inception in 1979.
