Africa Beyond 4IR (AB4IR)

About Africa Beyond 4IR (AB4IR)

Africa Beyond 4IR is a non-profit company (NPC) founded on the market need to redress the digital divide apparent in previously disadvantaged communities of South Africa. Our programmes expose disadvantaged communities to gaming, animation, drones, and virtual reality business opportunities. Communities are empowered through technology, innovation, and incubation. We introduce start-up entrepreneurs to new trends in technology, advise them on how to develop their business ideas for market access, and commercialize their innovations.

South Africa’s digital creative industries are slowly awakening to the opportunities the sector presents. With Gaming estimated to be worth $256.97b by 2025, animation’s estimated growth $300b by 2025 and AR/VR estimated growth of $161.1 billion by 2025 it is hard to ignore the potential presented by the digital creative sector. Sadly, most small to medium enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups do not have access to the opportunities presented as the sector is considered expensive and has high barriers
of entry.

As a result, the start-up failure rate is alarming and worrisome, with 8 out of 10 small businesses in the creative sector likely to fail within the first five years of inception citing over and above the lack of high technology equipment required, lack of funding, support, licencing, access to resources and markets. Africa Beyond 4IR (AB4IR), is a digital Innovation hub established in partnership with the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) and the Tshwane South TVET College in Mabopane with the aim of bridging the apparent digital and gender divide prevalent in previously disadvantaged communities in South Africa. AB4IR enables and exposes disadvantaged communities to gaming, animation, drone technology, and virtual reality business opportunities by assisting them to develop and commercialise innovations and technologies in these sectors.

Augmenting success for business

Committed to assisting the digital creative industries start-ups, AB4IR offer empowering programmes that include our twenty-four (24) months business incubation programme, the Umbokoda initiative which is consciously intended to encourage, develop, and support female participation in the ICT sector and, the drone technology programme
in partnership with the Drone Council South Africa.

To date, we have interacted with over 5000 youth online and offered regional, national, and international programmes with our highlight being the Worldwide Women in Innovation, Incubation and Technology Summit (W-WIITS) which was hosted virtually and included the participation of 26 speakers from 12 countries and 5 continents. This year the Summit will be hosted on 24-26 August 2021. We look forward to our inaugural Digital Youth Festival in June 2021 aims to encourage youth participation in the sector while embracing 4IR and raising awareness of opportunities available in the digital creative sectors.

“We are grateful to our current partners and invite more partners to help us in fostering entrepreneurship, generate knowledge-based companies, uplift communities, attract digital creative companies and expand our services to more areas.” says the AB4IR CEO, Ms Kelebogile Molopyane
