About Atlantis Special Economic Zone
The Atlantis Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) for Green Technologies is located on the West Coast of South Africa, in the Cape Town Metro. The zone is dedicated to the manufacturing and provision of services in the green technology space. Wind turbines, solar panels, insulation, biofuels, electric vehicles, materials recycling and green building materials are examples of green technology that are welcomed. If you are a manufacturer, service provider or supplier to green tech value chains, the ASEZ may be a great place to locate. It offers the benefits of co-location, access to strong markets, a development-ready area, great support and incentives, and an attractive skills base to recruit from, which is driven by the Integrated Ecosystems team.
Who We Are
The Integrated Ecosystem department (IES) includes Skills and Enterprise Development, together with Community Integration. The team applies principles of system thinking to identify and address deeply rooted socio-economic challenges in a complex community environment and to support expansion of community assets and adaptive systems. The IES team’s work supports the Living Lab through its activities, most notably ensuring social inclusion through harnessing green technology for the Atlantis community, as well as its industrial zone. The team of six collectively implement initiatives to support the development agenda. Their expertise includes business incubation, green economy and digital development, community engagement coupled with a wealth of business and local knowledge from three home-grown Atlantis talents.
Services/Products We Offer
The IES team supports the community through skills, enterprise, and community development activities, dedicated to enabling Atlantis youth and its community to tap into increased green economy opportunities. Accordingly, green skills development in Atlantis forms part of the strategic objectives of the Atlantis Special Economic Zone Company (ASEZCo), designated for the manufacturing of green technologies. This commitment, growing the regional economy, is aligned to the legislative requirement of the SEZ act and remains at the heart of the socio-economic development activities. Through this effort the ASEZCo seeks to enable the local community with skills and capabilities that are in demand, whilst ensuring that investors, establishing in the area, are met with readily available skills and have no need to seek these skills elsewhere.
The investment into skills development and community initiatives is aligned to many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), collectively aiming to provide a resilient and more sustainable future for Atlantis. The concept of ‘shared value’ refers to identifying and expanding connections between societal and economic progress. This is a powerful practice as it is driven by the core of business, thus ensuring that sustainable and equitable impact on communities is not extractive by nature, but value adding. The work in skills development and community integration directly addresses SDGs 8 Decent work and economic growth, SDG 9- Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG 11 Make cities safe and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. The integration of business and community through intentional engagement and action, actively enables participation in the economy and accessing employment opportunities.
Working in alignment to these SDGs is in turn reflected in the Living Lab moving towards a world-class investment destination and eco-industrial park.
