Black UmbrellasLEADERS IN JOB CREATION & SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT
About Black Umbrellas
As an Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) incubation organisation within the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation, Black Umbrellas partners with the private sector, government and civil society to address the high failure rate and low levels of entrepreneurship amongst 100% Black-owned businesses in South Africa.
The model is aimed at supporting emerging and existing 100% Black owned businesses through a holistic incubation programme so that they are able to become sustainable and scalable businesses with meaningful access to procurement, funding and networking opportunities. By providing a structured and highly subsidised programme, using a national footprint of business incubation offices and virtual support, Black Umbrellas’ clients are afforded the expertise, infrastructure and resources to make a meaningful contribution to the growth of the South African economy.
Fundamental to the success of the model is a tiered intervention, where applicants/clients transition and bolster their business through successive levels of activation. The programme activation begins with a Business Foundation programme, followed by a Business Readiness programme through to acceleration and continuing business development.
To ensure that each business on the programme is holistically developed, Black Umbrellas has a dedicated team including Business Coaches supporting each business through their development . Additionally, the programme also provides mentorship support to businesses. Mentors and mentees are assessed and matched to form an ongoing mentoring relationship aimed at improving the sustainability and growth of the mentees.
Since its inception in 2009, Black Umbrellas has collectively supported 1 775 100% Black owned businesses that have generated over R3 billion in turnover and created and preserved close on 12 000 jobs.
Black Umbrellas has proven itself as an industry leader for the past 10 years with international accolades for its work from the International Business Innovation Association (InBIA). For over 30 years, InBIA has recognised business incubators and entrepreneurship centres with proven track records of excellence.
