About Rovos Rail

Experience the opulent elegance of rail travel on the most luxurious train in the world on one of Rovos Rail’s exceptional safaris through the heart of Africa.

A trip aboard Rovos Rail is a journey like no other. Combining some of the most magnificent scenery with the glamour and excitement of the golden age of rail travel, Rovos Rail will delight the most discerning traveller. With discreet and friendly service, excellent cuisine and a selection of South Africa’s finest wines, Rovos Rail harks back to a simpler, more elegant era encompassing the timeless grace and spirited romance of African exploration.

The Royal, Deluxe and Pullman suites on board house a maximum of 72 passengers, offering accommodation of the highest standard combining the grandeur of pre-war travel with subtle modern innovations.

Meals on the train are an event and, at dinner, gentlemen are asked to wear jacket and tie with ladies dressing for the occasion.  Every morning there is a full breakfast with dishes cooked to order and a buffet selection of fresh fruits and yoghurts.  Lunch and dinner are set menus and both are complemented by a selection of excellent African wines.

There is no better way to enjoy the rolling vistas and dramatic sunsets of the African wilds than from the open-air balcony at the end of each observation car – a delight for passengers as the train  rarely exceeds 60 kilometres –  and with windows that open and close, guests’ senses are truly stirred by the vast and diverse African landscapes.

Trains depart regularly from Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria for Cape Town, Durban and Victoria Falls with longer journeys operated on an annual basis.  These include two golf itineraries, of nine and 10 days, each with delightful programmes for non-golfers. There is another nine-day safari to Walvis Bay in Namibia as well as two-week adventures which include destinations such as Dar es Salaam in Tanzinia and Lobito in Angola.
