About SSISA Sports Science Institute of South Africa
The Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) exists to optimise the sporting performance and health of all South Africans through the execution, application, and dissemination of science. Since 1994, the Sports Science Institute of South Africa, in collaboration with UCT’s Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine (ESSM), has been a game-changer in sports performance, sports injury prevention, and promoting healthy living. Our goal is to positively impact lives and to make our services, interventions and expertise accessible to all South Africa. Our vision is that our reach will have no boundaries and our impact will be globally meaningful.
Be Your Personal Best
WHO WE ARE:
Since 1994, SSISA has been a game-changer in sports performance, sports injury prevention, and promoting healthy living. We have transformed lives, changed practice, optimised performance and, in collaboration with UCT’s Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, provided evidence to inform policy and advocate physical activity and sports participation for all South Africans.
WHAT WE OFFER:
SSISA has four strategic pillars: Wellness, Sports Performance, Education and Research. Through each of these pillars, and the services and products therein, we bring people closer to realizing their full potential and to being their personal best.
Lead by a team of Biokineticists (exercise rehabilitation specialists), services include one on one training, structured group programmes, personalised health assessments, sleep interventions, community outreach programmes from early childhood development to the older adult phase and corporate wellness solutions.
Sports Performance Centre:
Services include sports specific fitness assessments, athlete monitoring, individual and group strength and conditioning, team testing and training. Our sports facility houses an endurance studio, high performance gym and a high intensity functional strength zone with supervised programmes. We target the aspirational, recreational and elite athlete.
We deliver credit and non-credit bearing courses in fitness, sport, life skills, wellness, physical education, sport coaching and administration. In 2017, we launched the SSISA Education Hub, which delivers dynamic & interactive online short courses in the field of fitness and wellness. From 2019 we will offer a national certificate and diploma in fitness and sports conditioning that gears people to enter the workplace as physical and community trainers.
We are in the business of creating the science on which best practice is based. Through the University of Cape Town’s Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, we actively collaborate with tertiary academic institutions across South Africa and globally in at least 29 countries, representing over 200 individuals.
